Young Guns Coral Competition at Five Flags Speedway

Teenaged drivers dominated the headlines in Friday night's racing action at Five Flags Speedway. Fourteen-year-old Hunter Robbins won the 50-lap Season Championship race for Pro Late models; Danny Martin Jr., who is four years his elder, was victorious in the hotly-contested USCS Sprint Car feature; and second-generation racer, Brandon Carlson claimed the Pro Late Model track championship. Ronnie Smith, past his teen years, was the winner in the 30-lap Modified race after not racing for two years.

Danny Martin Jr. of Sarastoa, Fl; held off fellow teenager and track record holder, Kevin Swindell for a 4 car length victory in the 30 lap USCS Sprint Car feature. 19-year-old Martin Jr. had a hot night of racing on a cool evening, sweeping the dash, his heat, and the feature. Swindell passed Matt Tiffany on lap 16 and pressured Martin to the finish, but Martin precisely threaded his way through lap traffic to seal the victory. He led from flag to flag.

Swindell missed breaking his own track record by .006 seconds, but was the fastest of 19 qualifiers with his 14.468 second qualifying lap. The father-son duo of Wayne Reutimann Jr., and Sr., finished third and fourth. Defending USCS champion Terry Gray won his heat race and finished fifth in the feature.

Hammering on the Pavement

19 year-old sprint car ace Danny "The Hammer" Martin, Jr. , grabbed the checkered flag at storm-torn Five Flags Speedway in Pensacola Florida. The Food Grade Transport / Martin Structures / http://www.eStateTrafficSchool.com Shaw Chassis was powered by a Don Ott Racing Engine. The win on asphalt shows that the team wins no matter what the surface. Sponsor Bob Potter of FGT was there to see the team bring home another win.

Kevin Swindell and Wayne Reutimann, Jr finished second and third. Hammer swept the Heat, the Dash and the Feature to maintain position in the chase for the United Sprint Car Series Championship.

The track, Home of The Snowball Derby, has been ravaged by multiple hurricanes on the Gulf Coast. The Hammer, promoters Mike Swims and Pete Walton will be entertaining workers displaced by Hurricane Katrina when they roll into Dixie Speedway for the $50,000 Dixie Double on October 28 and 29, 2005. Next stops on the Tour: Mobile, Alabama; Volusia Speedway near Daytona Beach; Dixie Speedway Near Atlanta Georgia; and finally back home where it all started at Tampa Bay's East Bay Raceway Park.

A Racing Family

Web Editor: Hugh Zeitlin Channel 13 Sports

The Cochran Motor Speedway will see folks pile in for the Winged Outlaw Sprint Car racing on Saturday night. A 19-year-old out of Florida won the event last year, and he's back. Eyewitness Sports shows you why his style of racing is a complete family affair.

Danny Martin, Jr., is pretty good at racing, holding quite a few top five and top ten finishes. The kid travels with two cars because this is bang em up kind of racing.

Danny Martin, Jr., Racer:
'We go to a lot of two day shows... you drive all the way to Tennessee you destroy your car the first night, which is pretty likely, in a sprint car you want to have another car so you can race the following night.'

The folks that keep him racing sit pretty close to his heart. His crew chief is his best friend, Dewey. His dad drives the rig. And Tucker, the dog, provides security.

Karen Martin, Mom:
'When you tell him we're going racing he just perks right up.'

Mom takes care of Tucker. Danny had to learn all the nuts and bolts of life in the fast lane. Other teams have mechanics... Martin didn't have that advantage.

Danny Martin, Jr., Racer:
'We have to try and figure the car out then drive it. That's why it took us a year and a half to run good and now that we finally learned it was better that way."

One day, Danny wants to drive NASCAR. He'll get a mechanic then. But you can bet he'll find a place for this crew that got him started.

Martin Repeats in Cochran

By Roby Helms
USCS Communications Director

COCHRAN, GA - Danny "The Hammer" Martin Jr. of Sarasota, FL won the 30-lap O'Reilly United Sprint Car Series feature race at Cochran Motor Speedway on Saturday night for the second straight year. Martin came from the seventh starting spot to take the lead with five laps to go in the Martin Structures, Inc. Schnee/ZRE.

Martin had an up and down night, as the 19-year-old driver started in the back of his heat race, worked his way up to the third spot, but spun in turn three with two laps to go. Martin came charging right back to finish fourth.

"George Gillespe at PRO Shocks gave me a new set up to try, and it really worked well for us," Martin said. "We started in the back of the heat, when to the front, and then I spun it out. We came back to finish fourth, and I knew we had something. I really love this track!"

Martin also gave his Dad, Danny Martin Sr., a nice birthday present for the second straight year. This marked the fifth win for Martin on a family special occasion like a birthday, or an anniversary. Martin earned the Huggins Cams Hard Charger of the Race Award, and was also the SpeedMart Young Gun of the Race.

Special Occasion Means Martin Wins

COCHRAN, GA - Danny Martin, Sr. had a birthday this week, todayHammer's lovely girlfriend, Jen Scarbrough was celebrating herbirthday too. Team mascot, Tucker the Travelling Sprint Car Dog beganan early celebration of his birthday too. On special occasions, Martin wins races.

Tonight Adams finished second.Martin, Jr., Martin Sr. and Tire Man, Dewey Mixon, took the Food GradeTransport / Martin Structures / eStateTrafficSchool.com Sprinter tovictory lane again in the Peach State.

This season's road to victory was strewn with 3 blown motors, 3 failedsteering boxes, and 3 broken rear ends. There are 24 races left inthe USCS season and mechanical demons have now been cast out. Adams Battles Martin For O'Reilly USCS Riverside Win

TRAVELERS REST, SC - Kenny Adams of Malabar, FL drove the Milk Movers, Inc./Goodson Farms Shaw Ott to his seventh O'Reilly United Sprint Car Series win of the season Friday night at Riverside Speedway. The 82nd series career win for the "Malabar Missile" came in the 30-lap lead-swapping battle with 19-year-old Danny Martin Jr. of Sarasota, FL.

"I think this series has the most talented group of young sprint car drivers in the country because these kids are tough," Adams said. "Danny raced me close and clean all race long. He would get by me in lapped traffic, and then I would get back my him."

The race was almost a carryover from the April 15 O'Reilly USCS Riverside Speedway show when Adams and Martin battled for the point. In that race, Martin led for the first 16 laps before Adams took over for the win.

In this latest version, it looked like the tables would turn the other way, as Adams led for the first eight laps before Martin took the lead in lapped traffic coming off turn two.

Just when it looked like "The Hammer" would get sweet revenge on Adams, the lead pair came up on more lapped traffic, and Adams went to the low side of turn four to retake the lead, and go on to his third straight Riverside Speedway win. Martin had to settle for second in the Martin Structures, Inc. Schnee/ZRE, and was the SpeedMart Young Gun of the race for drivers under the age of 25.

"I've never been beat here, and there at the start I was beginning to claim this place as my own when Danny went sailing by me," Adams said.

Third went to Johnny Bridges of Cherryville, NC in the Bridges Motorsports J&J/Bridges Ford after a side-by-side finish with Matt Tiffany of Daytona Beach, FL. Bridges won the Engler Machine and Tool first ten-lap heat race and drew the eighth starting spot.

The next event for the O'Reilly USCS will be Saturday night at I-20 Speedway
in Batesburg, SC.

Is racing at Bristol the closest thing to Sprint car racing?

United Sprint Car Series Race Blog: Is racing at Bristol the closest thing to Sprint car racing?: "

TONY STEWART- Bristol Preview - From the Voice of the NASCAR Nation:

'Is racing at Bristol the closest thing to Sprint car racing?

'The two places that stand out in my mind that's like Bristol are Salem (Ind.) and Winchester (Ind.). Both of those tracks were half-mile ovals with high banks. You ran at the top of those tracks versus the bottom, which is where we run at Bristol. The racing was so fast it was a hold-your-breathe-type situation. The types of cars that we were running at the speeds we were running -it was faster than what a stock car runs at Bristol. Running those two places is probably the closest thing you can do to get yourself ready for Bristol.'' "
